VALERIE ORR FROM LARNE FACES JUSTICE OVER CRUELTY TO PET DOG HARLEY

Valerie Orr, a resident of Mounthill Manor in Larne, has been found guilty of neglecting her pet dog, Harley, an incident that has drawn significant attention from local authorities and animal welfare advocates alike.

Born around 1966, Orr was charged with failing to provide proper care for her border collie, which was discovered in a severely neglected state at her home address in Larne.

These charges were formally brought against her by the Mid and East Antrim Borough Council, under the provisions of the Welfare of Animals Act (Northern Ireland) 2011.

The case came to light following a thorough investigation conducted by the Council’s Animal Welfare Officer, who visited Orr’s property in March 2021.

The investigation was prompted by concerns raised after Harley was taken to a veterinary clinic, where his condition was found to be critically poor.

Subsequently, authorities executed a warrant to search Orr’s residence, and Harley was removed from the premises for urgent medical assessment.

The veterinarian’s examination revealed a distressing picture: Harley was suffering from a foul smell emanating from his body, with large mats of hair that were heavily soiled with urine and feces.

The dog also exhibited signs of infection around his rear end, which was particularly alarming.

During the examination, the vet identified a severely enlarged and nodular left anal gland, which had abscessed and was leaking infected material.

This painful and chronic lesion was causing Harley significant suffering, highlighting the extent of neglect he had endured.

The veterinarian concluded that euthanasia was in the best interest of the dog to alleviate his pain and suffering.

Following the court proceedings, Valerie Orr was sentenced to pay a fine and cover the associated costs, totaling £622.

Additionally, she received a three-year ban from owning animals, a restriction that will remain in effect until January 2025.

This case underscores the importance of animal welfare laws and the ongoing efforts by local authorities in Larne and the wider Mid and East Antrim area to protect vulnerable animals from cruelty and neglect.
