A man identified as Valentin Tica, aged 24, has been handed an eight-year prison sentence after being convicted of a serious sexual assault involving a 13-year-old girl in Edinburgh. The incident, which took place in woodland areas near a path in Edinburgh, shocked the local community and prompted a thorough investigation by law enforcement authorities.

According to court proceedings, Tica encountered the young girl while she was sitting with a friend on a bench close to a wooded area. At the time, Tica was under the influence of alcohol and drugs, which appeared to impair his judgment. He initially approached the girl and offered her drugs, an act that seemed to be an attempt to gain her trust. Despite her apparent reluctance, Tica insisted on walking her home, but instead of following her wishes, he coerced her into the nearby woods where he committed a violent sexual assault.

The High Court in Edinburgh heard that after sitting beside the girl and her friend, Tica's behavior changed once her friend left. He then forcibly dragged her into the woodland area and raped her. The court was informed that Tica's background report classified him as a high risk of harm, although his previous convictions were minor and unrelated to sexual offenses. The victim’s mother provided a statement during the proceedings, describing the profound trauma her daughter has endured since the assault.

During the trial, Tica’s defense argued that he believed the girl was older, approximately 16 years old, and claimed that his actions were influenced by his intoxication. They also highlighted his remorsefulness. However, the judge, Lord Ericht, emphasized the severity of the crime and the need for appropriate punishment. He stated that Tica had pled guilty to raping a 13-year-old girl and that he was 22 at the time of the assault.

Lord Ericht detailed the circumstances of the attack, noting that Tica sat beside the girl and her friend near a woodland path, and after her friend left, he forced her into the woods and committed the assault. The judge also ordered that Tica must not contact the victim in any way, including through electronic means or social media, and that this non-harassment order would remain in effect indefinitely. The court also sentenced Tica to serve an additional 12 months for an assault-related charge, which will be served concurrently with his prison term.

Furthermore, the court announced that upon completion of his sentence, Tica faces deportation to Romania. The judge highlighted the importance of protecting the victim and ensuring that Tica would not pose further harm. Detective Inspector Keith Taylor praised the victim’s resilience and expressed confidence that Tica would face the consequences of his actions. The proceedings were conducted with the assistance of a Romanian interpreter to ensure clarity and fairness.

In his sentencing remarks, Lord Ericht underscored the gravity of the offense, stating that the victim was sitting with a friend when Tica approached and sat beside them. Despite her discomfort, he insisted on walking her home and then forcibly took her into the woods where he raped her violently. The judge acknowledged the impact on the victim’s family and emphasized that the sentence reflected the seriousness of the crime. The court also issued a non-harassment order against Tica, prohibiting any form of contact with the victim for an indefinite period, to safeguard her well-being and prevent further trauma.
