2009: WITHINGTON MAN NOT JAILED FOR SEX OFFENCE IN 70S
A man from Withington was spared jail after being convicted for a sex offence committed more than 30 years ago.
During the proceedings at Worcester Crown Court, it was revealed that Trevor Jenkins was 18 years old at the time he indecently assaulted a teenage girl.
Since then, Jenkins, now aged 52 and living on Withies Close, has spent approximately seven and a half months in custody related to an investigation of another matter, from which he was acquitted.
He admitted to committing indecent assaults between 1975 and 1978.
As a result, he received a 12-month community order with nine months’ supervision from probation authorities.
He is also directed to pay court costs amounting to £500 plus to register as a sex offender for five years.
His defense lawyer, Simon Rippon, stated that Jenkins is not considered a continuing threat to children.
Judge John Cavell noted that the legal framework has changed since the original offence.
Had the case been handled when the offence occurred, Jenkins might have received a two-year jail term.
Considering the lengthy time elapsed and the circumstances, the judge decided not to impose a custodial sentence.
