Acklam Child Sexual Abuser
In December 2018, a disturbing case unfolded involving Trevor Dodson, a 62-year-old man from Acklam, Middlesbrough, who was caught engaging in explicit online conversations with an undercover police officer posing as a teenage girl. The incident highlights the dangers of online predators and the importance of vigilant law enforcement efforts to protect minors.
According to court proceedings at Teesside Crown Court, Dodson used two fictitious identities while communicating on social media platforms, including Tagged and Facebook Messenger. He believed he was chatting with a 14-year-old girl named Olivia, but in reality, the individual was an undercover officer. The police revealed that Dodson initiated sexualized conversations almost immediately after the online interaction began, encouraging the officer to send indecent images of herself and even suggesting they should have sex.
Throughout the exchanges, the officer maintained that Olivia was in school and messaging Dodson between lessons, which added a layer of deception to the interactions. The fake profile claimed Olivia was 18, but once Dodson started engaging more intimately, she disclosed her true age as 14. She warned him, saying, “I’m 14 so you probably don’t want to chat,” to which Dodson responded casually, “That’s OK x.”
Dodson, a father of three, initially claimed to be 54 and used the alias Tom Tucker. He discussed “naughty chat” and exchanging pictures, proposing to move their conversation to Facebook Messenger. Under a second false name, his remarks quickly turned sexual. He asked her provocative questions such as, “What are you prepared to do? Are you naughty? Have you seen guys? Will you do anything? What size boobs have you got? If I asked you to send me a pic of them, what would you do?”
When the girl indicated she might consider sending pictures, Dodson responded with praise, calling her a “good girl” and requesting images of her with and without a bra. The officer then sent photos of a female body, prompting Dodson to react with admiration, saying, “Oh fabulous… oh wow.” He further sent explicit images of his genitalia and made more sexual comments. When the girl mentioned “sex,” he replied simply, “yes.”
The messages spanned over four days in March, and Dodson was arrested in August of the same year. During police interviews, he admitted to creating the Facebook profile to talk to women, claiming his family believed he did not use or like Facebook. He denied any sexual interest in children, asserting that his actions were driven by “pure curiosity and nothing more.”
Dodson, residing on Minsterley Drive in Acklam, Middlesbrough, pleaded guilty to two counts of attempting to incite a child to engage in sexual activity. This marked his first conviction. Despite his guilty plea, he continued to deny any sexual motive during a subsequent interview with a probation officer.
Judge Deborah Sherwin addressed Dodson in court, acknowledging the impact on his family and noting that their suffering was a significant consequence of his actions. She observed that Dodson appeared embarrassed and ashamed, which she considered as part of his punishment. The judge sentenced him to 16 months in prison, suspended for two years, and ordered him to complete 25 days of rehabilitation activities. Additionally, Dodson was subjected to a sexual harm prevention order that restricts his contact with individuals under 16 and limits his use of the internet and electronic devices. He will also be registered as a sex offender for the next ten years, reflecting the seriousness of his offenses.
