TRACY CALLANDER FROM ARDOYNE BELFAST SENTENCED FOR ANIMAL CRUELTY IN BOLD CASE
In a disturbing case that has shocked the local community, Tracy Callander, also known as Tracy Heaney, of Etna Drive in Ardoyne, Belfast, was found guilty of neglecting her pet dog to the point of death. The incident, which took place in May 2015, involved the tragic death of an Akita-type dog that was allowed to suffer and ultimately perish due to severe neglect.Animal welfare officers responded to Callander’s residence after receiving reports of concern. Upon arrival, they discovered the dog in a deplorable state—emaciated, covered in its own excrement, and left in the backyard of her home. The dog's body was in such a poor condition that it was clear it had been starved for an extended period. The officers' investigation revealed that the dog had been left to die in the garden, with no apparent intervention from Callander to provide necessary care or attention.
During her court appearance in February 2016, Callander admitted to not feeding the dog. However, she claimed that she was unaware of the animal’s worsening condition because she did not venture to the back of her house where the dog was kept. She faced charges of causing unnecessary suffering to an animal and failing to meet the animal’s basic needs. The post-mortem examination confirmed that the dog had died from starvation, a result of neglect.
District Judge Ramsey, presiding over the case, expressed strong condemnation of Callander’s actions. He stated that the case clearly exceeded the threshold for custody, emphasizing her apparent callous disregard for her pet’s suffering. The judge pointed out that Callander had not gone near the dog and had failed to notice or respond to its deteriorating condition. During the proceedings, a solicitor representing Belfast City Council highlighted the severity of the neglect, and the judge underscored the cruelty involved.
In her defense, Callander’s solicitor argued that she was experiencing significant personal trauma at the time, which contributed to her neglectful behavior. Nonetheless, Judge Ramsey responded sharply, noting that if she was unable to care for the dog, she could have contacted the Ulster Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (USPCA) to intervene. The judge also referenced a photograph taken by animal welfare officers, which depicted the emaciated dog covered in feces, as a stark reminder of the cruelty inflicted.
Addressing Callander directly, Judge Ramsey handed down a sentence of four months in prison, suspended for three years, along with a fine of £69 in court costs. Additionally, she was banned from owning or caring for any animals for a period of 15 years, a ban that will remain in effect until February 2031. The judge remarked on her fortunate circumstances, asking her if she realized how lucky she was not to be imprisoned immediately. Callander, present in the public gallery, acknowledged her luck, stating she was aware she was fortunate not to face jail.
As of 2023, it has been reported that Tracy Callander has changed her name to Tracy Heaney and now resides in Ashton View, Dumbarton, Scotland, with the postal code G82 5DR. This case remains a stark reminder of the importance of animal welfare and the consequences of neglect.
