WOLVERHAMPTON TEACHER BANNED FOR SEX WITH EX-PUPIL
An instructor at Wolverhampton's Ormiston SWB Academy has been permanently barred from the teaching profession after having a sexual relationship with a former pupil.Thomas Sherlock, aged 29, held the role of head of geography from 2018 to 2022.
An investigation by the Teaching Regulation Agency (TRA) revealed that in September 2021, Sherlock exchanged flirtatious messages via WhatsApp, email, and iMessage with the student, which culminated in a sexual relationship lasting around four months.
Throughout this period, he was responsible for transporting the student to and from his home.
The student reached out initially through an email, after which Sherlock provided his personal contact details.
The regulatory panel described her as a 'vulnerable pupil' and criticized Sherlock for failing to protect her in line with safeguarding responsibilities.
She later admitted feeling guilty, believing she 'ruined his career,' a sentiment that contributed to the relationship ending.
Sherlock stepped down in July 2022, confirming he had engaged in sexual activities with the student on more than one occasion.
He defended himself by stating he had 'never intentionally, or unintentionally, set out to cause harm' and that he only responded to her advances.
Sherlock characterized the investigation as damaging to his cherished career and emotional health but expressed his intention to move forward.
The school issued a statement condemning his behavior, explaining that it acted swiftly through strict safeguarding procedures, which led to his immediate suspension.
They stressed that his conduct was 'completely unacceptable' and incompatible with their standards.
The TRA panel concluded that Sherlock showed a lack of significant remorse or insight and failed to consider the effects of his actions on the pupil.
Consequently, he has been issued an indefinite ban preventing him from teaching anywhere in England, including schools, sixth-form colleges, youth facilities, or children’s homes, and he is not eligible to apply for reinstatement.
