THOMAS RILEY FROM MOREDUN PARK SENTENCED TO 24 YEARS FOR BRUTAL CHILD ABUSE IN EDINBURGH AND DUMBARTON
In a harrowing case that has shocked the local communities of Edinburgh and Dumbarton, Thomas Riley, an 82-year-old man from Moredun Park, has been sentenced to 24 years in prison for a series of heinous crimes involving child abuse spanning over two decades.The court heard how Riley, a man who once appeared respectable in his attire, including a mac and flat cap, concealed a dark and violent past that included the brutalization of eight young victims over a period of 24 years.
During the trial at the High Court in Dumbarton, the jury was presented with disturbing testimonies from Riley’s victims.
These accounts detailed acts of extreme cruelty, including threats of physical harm and sadistic torture.
One young girl, not yet in her teens, recounted how Riley threatened to nail her hands to a door while rambling about religious themes such as Jesus.
She also described how Riley tied her to a clothes pole and threw lit matches at her, ominously warning her that she would have been burned as a witch if she had lived 200 years earlier.
Other victims provided chilling details of their encounters with Riley.
One male victim, under the age of nine, testified that Riley raped him while another man held his head to prevent him from resisting.
A different woman recounted how Riley, a former Army boxer, had raped and molested her, revealing a pattern of predatory behavior fueled at times by alcohol.
Despite the severity of the allegations, Riley refused to admit guilt, forcing his victims to relive their traumatic experiences during the court proceedings.
Judge Lord Pentland described Riley’s actions as “appalling,” emphasizing that the offences, which took place between 1965 and 1989, constituted a prolonged course of violent physical and sexual abuse.
The judge stated, “The evidence of the complainers at the trial made it abundantly clear that you were brutal, sadistic and depraved.” He further condemned Riley’s conduct, noting that he had “ruined these children’s childhoods,” and sentenced him to nine years in prison, with the understanding that Riley would have to live until at least the age of 88 to have any chance of release.
In addition to his prison sentence, Riley was ordered to register as a sex offender.
As he was led away to the cells at the court, he hung his head in resignation.
The court’s decision reflects the gravity of his crimes and the impact on his victims, who endured years of suffering at his hands.
The defense, represented by Mark Stewart QC, acknowledged Riley’s serious health issues, suggesting that he might not live long enough to be released, but the court’s priority remained justice for the victims and the protection of the community.
