THOMAS BLACK OF NEWARTHILL CAUGHT WITH CHILD SEX ABUSE IMAGES IN SCOTLAND

In November of the previous year, law enforcement officers conducted a raid on the residence of Thomas Black, a 29-year-old man residing in Lochlea Way, Newarthill. During this operation, police uncovered a disturbing collection of digital images stored on Black’s personal devices. The investigation revealed that Black possessed a total of 347 indecent photographs depicting minors, a significant portion of which were classified as the most severe category, Category A, indicating the worst forms of abuse.

Black was subsequently taken into custody and brought before Hamilton Sheriff Court to face charges related to the possession of child sexual abuse images. During the court proceedings, the prosecution, led by Michael Macintosh, detailed the findings from the police analysis of Black’s seized laptop. Macintosh stated that Black initially claimed he used his device primarily to access typical adult pornography. However, he admitted that he would sometimes view and possess images of children when under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Black reportedly told authorities that he would delete such images immediately after viewing them, expressing a desire not to view such material but acknowledging that the urge would sometimes overpower his intentions when intoxicated.

Black’s defense attorney, Vincent McGovern, argued that his client was amenable to rehabilitation and proposed that a community payback order would be a suitable alternative to imprisonment. The court considered this plea and ultimately decided against sending Black to prison. Instead, Sheriff Thomas Millar imposed a community-based sentence, requiring Black to complete 240 hours of unpaid work within the community.

Furthermore, Black was placed under supervision for a period of three years, during which he will be monitored by social workers. He will also be required to register as a sex offender for the same duration. The sheriff emphasized the importance of rehabilitation, stating, “I’m persuaded not to impose custody as the prospect of rehabilitation appears positive.”

As part of his conditions, Black is prohibited from having any contact with individuals under the age of 16 without prior approval. Additionally, he must make any device capable of accessing the internet available for inspection by authorities during his supervision period. These measures aim to prevent any further offenses and support his reintegration into society with appropriate safeguards in place.
