OFFENDER JAILED FOR BRUTAL DOMESTIC ABUSE INCLUDING SUFFOCATION AND COERCIVE CONTROL
A 22-year-old man from Cambourne has been sentenced to five years and eight months in prison after a brutal campaign of domestic abuse against his partner.The incident involved a terrifying 90-minute attack that exposed a pattern of coercive control, violence, and humiliation.
The offender, Tanveer Chowdhury, of Desborough Avenue, Stanground, was convicted at Cambridge Crown Court of multiple offenses, including an attack last summer where he subjected his girlfriend to intentional suffocation and public degradation.
The court heard that on July 27, 2024, after taunting his partner via text message that he was with another woman, Chowdhury launched a prolonged assault at her home in Cambourne, stripping her, beating her in front of friends, showing them an intimate video, and physically and verbally abusing her, leaving her bruised and terrified.
His abusive behavior included forcing her into the bathroom, pinning her to the floor during arguments, holding her head under bathwater twice, seizing her phone to isolate her from friends, and demanding complete control over her movements.
The victim eventually contacted police, revealing that Chowdhury’s violence had increased after she moved in with him.
He had attempted to intervene but was unable to stop the attack.
In April 2025, Chowdhury was found guilty of two counts of intentional suffocation, coercive behavior, and sharing intimate material to cause alarm.
He also pleaded guilty to bodily harm and assault by beating.
Judge Andrew Hurst described him as highly dangerous and said, 'You controlled her life to the point of misery,' emphasizing the severity of his attitude towards women.
Chowdhury was sentenced to five years and eight months and was handed an indefinite restraining order, with authorities praising the victim’s bravery in coming forward.
