SUSAN BROMLEY SHOCKS STOKE WITH ILLEGAL SEXUAL RELATIONSHIP INVOLVING TEENAGE RESIDENT

In a disturbing case that has sent shockwaves through the Stoke community, Susan Bromley, a care home worker, was sentenced to six years in prison after being found guilty of engaging in illicit sexual activities with a teenage resident under her care. The offences took place during her night shifts at a care facility in Stoke-on-Trent during the mid-1990s, revealing a grave breach of trust and a betrayal of her professional responsibilities.

According to court proceedings, Bromley's inappropriate relationship with the young boy began when he was just 14 years old. The abuse persisted even after the boy left the care home, highlighting a troubling pattern of misconduct. It was only years later that the victim reported the abuse to authorities, which ultimately led to Bromley's arrest and subsequent trial.

The 53-year-old defendant, who resides on Frank Street in Stoke, was convicted at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court on six counts of indecent assault. Judge Robert Trevor-Jones presided over the case and delivered a stern verdict, emphasizing the severity of Bromley's breach of trust. The judge stated, "You were in a special position which involved administering pastoral care. Your victim was a vulnerable person, who had his own difficulties, which is why he came to be in the care system."

Details of the case revealed that Bromley's duties involved overseeing residents during night hours at the care home. The victim, who first arrived at the facility in 1995 at the age of 13, stayed there for just over a year. Prosecutor Tariq Shakoor described the close relationship that developed between Bromley and the young boy, noting that Bromley was often kind to him, offering cigarettes, sweets, and money, which the boy used to buy cannabis.

Shakoor explained that their sexual relationship began with simple acts like kissing and escalated to full sexual intercourse. The sexual encounters took place in the communal areas of the care home during the night, carefully chosen to avoid detection from other residents. Bromley, who was married at the time, also drove her victim to her own residence to facilitate more private meetings.

Concerns about Bromley's conduct arose when her colleagues noticed suspicious behaviour. They reported their suspicions to superiors, but Bromley resigned from her position before any formal internal investigation could be conducted. By that point, the victim had returned to live with his family, yet the inappropriate relationship continued beyond his departure from the care home.

During the trial, mitigation lawyer Darren Whitehead highlighted that Bromley had no prior criminal record. He also pointed out that the victim was a sexually mature young man who was infatuated with her. The court heard that the six counts of indecent assault involved Bromley engaging in various sexual acts with the victim when he was aged 14 and 15. She was acquitted of three other similar charges relating to when the victim was 13.

In her sentencing, Judge Trevor-Jones made it clear that Bromley's actions warranted severe consequences. She was ordered to register as a sex offender indefinitely and was barred from working with children for the rest of her life, underscoring the gravity of her misconduct and the breach of her professional duties.
