SURREY CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE STATS
New figures show 347 children in the county were victims of sex crimes in the past year that include rape, incest or abuse through prostitution and pornography – and police admit the true picture is significantly worse.
The force said that while 347 of these crimes were reported, many more offences are not notified to them.
“We know that much abuse goes unreported,” a police spokesman said.
“We have dedicated teams of officers trained in dealing with cases of child abuse.
“Every offence is the subject of a robust investigation, and we are working hard to encourage reporting and to gain the confidence of victims.” Of the 347 reported cases of child abuse, 55 children had not reached secondary school age and 12 were aged five years or under.
The majority of the other 292 offences were reported against 11 to 17-year-olds, according to figures released by the NSPCC.
