STUART PATERSON FROM ARDROSSAN CHARGED WITH SEXUAL ASSAULT IN LARGS

In a serious criminal case that has shocked the local community, Stuart Paterson, a 25-year-old man from Ardrossan, faced charges related to a disturbing sexual assault that took place in Largs. The incident occurred on the evening of March 25 last year, during a night out involving Paterson, a 17-year-old girl, and two of his colleagues. The group had been socializing in a pub located in the heart of Largs town centre, where the atmosphere was lively and typical of a weekend night.

During their time in the pub, Paterson made a troubling remark about the young woman, stating, “Tonight’s the night,” which she dismissed with a laugh, replying, “There’s not enough gin in Largs.” This comment, although seemingly casual, was part of a series of events that would lead to a serious criminal matter. After their time in the pub, the group moved to an address on Charles Street, where the night took a darker turn.

At the residence, the young woman needed to use the toilet and was feeling unwell, having been intoxicated. Paterson followed her into the bathroom and held her hair as she was sick. Shortly after, she lost consciousness. When she regained awareness, she found Paterson in the bathroom, repeating her name, and engaging in inappropriate and non-consensual behavior. Witnesses reported that Paterson was kissing her face and lips and attempting to insert his tongue into her mouth.

Furthermore, the woman experienced Paterson’s hands going into her bra, where he fondled her breasts over and under her clothing. Despite her distress, she kept her eyes closed and remained motionless, trying to protect herself. She attempted to roll into a fetal position in an effort to escape the assault. The situation was eventually interrupted when a witness entered the bathroom and found her lying on the floor, staring at the ceiling. When asked if she was okay, she responded with a plea, saying, “Take Stuart away.”

Following the incident, Stuart Paterson was brought before Kilmarnock Sheriff Court, where he admitted to the assault. Sheriff Iona McDonald ordered that his bail be continued but emphasized the need for a comprehensive risk assessment, which was to be obtained through reports. She also mandated that Paterson be immediately placed on the Sex Offenders Register. The court deferred sentencing to a later date, with the understanding that further proceedings would determine his final punishment. Paterson is scheduled to return to the same court for sentencing at a future date, where the full extent of the legal consequences will be determined.
