STEWART MCDEVITT FROM AMESBURY AND PLYMOUTH SENTENCED FOR HORRIFIC ABUSE OF YOUNG GIRLS IN PLYMOUTH AND AMESBURY

In a case that has shocked the local communities of Amesbury and Plymouth, Stewart McDevitt, aged 50, has been sentenced to 16 years in prison for a series of heinous crimes involving the sexual abuse of two young girls. The disturbing details of the case were revealed during a court hearing at Winchester Crown Court last week, where it was established that one of the victims was only nine years old when McDevitt began his pattern of abuse.

McDevitt, who was formerly residing in Amesbury at the time of the offenses, vehemently denied the allegations when he was initially arrested in March of the previous year. However, after a rigorous one-week trial that commenced on July 2 at Portsmouth Crown Court, a jury found him guilty of eight counts of indecent assault and two counts of rape. The court also acquitted him of three additional counts of indecent assault, which he was accused of but was not convicted for.

The court proceedings shed light on the severity and repeated nature of McDevitt’s crimes, which spanned over a period during which he targeted vulnerable young girls. The impact of his actions has been described as long-lasting and devastating for the victims, who demonstrated remarkable courage by coming forward and cooperating with law enforcement authorities.

Following the sentencing, Detective Constable Darren Ambrose of Wiltshire Police issued a statement emphasizing the gravity of the case. He said, “McDevitt preyed on two innocent girls, which had a long-lasting and devastating effect on them. They have shown great courage in coming forward and speaking to police, and we hope that this case will encourage any other victims of sexual abuse to report it.”

Despite his conviction, McDevitt continued to deny any involvement in the crimes. Nevertheless, the jury’s verdict reflected the vile nature of his offenses. As part of his sentence, McDevitt was also subjected to a sexual offences prevention order, aimed at preventing any future harm. Currently residing in Barne Barton, Plymouth, he will serve his prison term, which underscores the serious stance taken by the justice system against such heinous acts.
