Morecambe Sexual Abuser
In a case that has shocked the community of Morecambe, Steven Tinker, a 53-year-old man, was sentenced to a total of five years in prison after being found guilty of multiple indecent assaults involving young girls. The incidents took place in his home, where he exploited the trust of two girls aged 10 and 11, who had initially visited him to do chores in exchange for sweets.

During the proceedings at Preston Crown Court, Judge Stuart Baker described Tinker as a “significant threat to young girls,” emphasizing the gravity of his actions and his prior criminal record for sex offences. Tinker, who resides on Dallam Avenue in Morecambe, had denied five charges of indecent assault related to the two victims but was convicted unanimously by the jury after two hours of deliberation.

Prosecutor Mr. Nick Kennedy outlined the disturbing details of the case. He explained that Tinker was at home during the daytime hours, despite working night shifts as a lorry driver. The two young girls became acquainted with him and would visit his residence to perform chores, motivated by the promise of sweets. It was also noted that other girls had visited Tinker’s home, lured by the distribution of sweets and cigarettes.

Initially, Tinker appeared to be a friendly figure, but his demeanor changed over time. Mr. Kennedy described how Tinker’s behavior became increasingly inappropriate, starting with touching and tickling the girls. The situation escalated as he began to put his hand under one girl’s T-shirt and attempted to kiss her on the lips. Disturbingly, he also filmed the second girl while she was sitting on the toilet, trying to kiss and fondle her.

Before the trial commenced, Tinker admitted to supplying cannabis to the girls, including encouraging one of them to smoke a joint. This girl later became a victim of his indecent assault. During his testimony, Tinker, who is also a grandfather, claimed that nothing improper had occurred and insisted that the girls were lying. However, the jury found him guilty of all charges after careful consideration.

It was also revealed that Tinker had a previous conviction dating back to 1989, when he received a four-year prison sentence for indecent assault and unlawful sexual intercourse with a girl under the age of 16. The court took this history into account when sentencing him.

Defense lawyer Mr. Keith Thomas argued that the allegations had severely impacted Tinker’s home life, but Judge Stuart Baker was unequivocal in his assessment. The judge stated, “I must regard you as a man of mature years who presents a significant threat to young girls. Your conduct was clearly deliberate and it was persistent. You don’t show any degree of insight into or acceptance of your criminal conduct.”

As part of his sentence, Tinker’s name will be placed on the Sex Offender’s Register indefinitely, reflecting the serious nature of his crimes and the ongoing risk he poses to the community of Morecambe.
