2012: HAGLEY MAN JAILED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT

A HAGLEY man who tied a woman to a bed and sexually assaulted her with a roll-on deodorant bottle has been jailed for 10 years.

Steven Shaw, 29, of Stakenbridge Lane, also cut up some of her clothing and stabbed a mattress with a knife, prosecutor Simon Phillips told Worcester Crown Court.

Shaw denied false imprisonment, assault by penetration, rape, assault causing actual bodily harm and making threats to kill.

He was found guilty of all the charges except rape at the end of a five-day trial.

Mr Phillips said the prosecution would not be seeking a retrial on the rape allegation, and the jury was discharged.

The offences took place at the woman’s house in Kidderminster on January 7 this year, after the pair had been drinking heavily into the early hours.

They argued because she did not want to have sex and she went to bed.

Just after 3am, Shaw went to the bedroom, restrained her with a dressing gown cord and assaulted her with the deodorant roll.

Later that day, he assaulted her again, causing bruises and cuts to her face and arm.

He told her he was going to kill her and stabbed the mattress of her bed with a knife.

Shaw, who denied all the allegations, said he used the deodorant as a sex toy because he thought the woman liked violent sex.

He said she had attacked him because she was jealous of text messages from another woman, and he had defended himself.

Abigail Nixon, defending, said that although Shaw had several previous convictions, none was for a sexual offence.

He had endured a difficult life which resulted in him taking heroin at the age of 14.

But he had been drug free for the past 18 months.

Judge Daniel Pearce-Higgins QC said that the 164 days Shaw had spent in custody would be deducted from his sentence but he would sign the sex offenders register for life.

He also made a restraining order banning Shaw from contacting his victim.
