FISHBURN MAN STEVEN RUSSELL SENTENCED FOR CHILD ABUSE IN THE 90S AND EARLY 2000S

In a case that has spanned nearly two decades, Steven Russell, a resident of Fishburn, has been held accountable for the sexual abuse of two young children during the late 1990s and early 2000s. The lengthy legal process culminated in a sentencing hearing at Durham Crown Court, where the full extent of his misconduct was finally addressed.

Russell, now 36 years old, was initially arrested in 2016 on allegations related to his conduct while he was under the age of 18. Despite denying any sexual misconduct at the time, the charges against him persisted. In October of the previous year, he faced 12 counts alleging indecency involving two complainants. These charges were presented in court, and Russell maintained his innocence throughout the proceedings.

However, as the case progressed, the Crown Prosecution Service introduced a new indictment in May, consisting of ten additional counts. During the hearing on May 2, Russell was confronted with these new allegations. He ultimately admitted to seven counts of indecent assault and one count of indecency with a child. These admissions covered a range of specific and general offences. Nevertheless, he continued to deny two counts related to taking indecent photographs of a child. The court accepted his pleas on the counts he admitted, and the sentencing was postponed to allow for the preparation of medical and background reports concerning Russell.

During the sentencing hearing, it was revealed that Russell resides with his parents at Cleveland View in Fishburn. It was also disclosed that he receives community psychiatric support, which indicates ongoing mental health issues. The court was informed that while Russell is physically capable of functioning as an adult, he struggles emotionally, which has impacted his ability to fully integrate into society.

The court heard harrowing accounts from the victims, who described the profound and lasting effects of Russell’s actions. One victim recounted how Russell’s abuse “destroyed” their childhood and revealed that they continue to suffer from anxiety attacks. The other victim shared that they have turned to alcohol and drugs in an attempt to “black out” the memories of the abuse, highlighting the deep psychological scars left behind.

Judge Simon Hickey addressed the court, noting that the prolonged nature of the offending over several years was an aggravating factor. Despite this, he acknowledged that Russell has been of good character since the offences. The judge sentenced Russell to three years in prison, with an 18-month term assigned for each victim. Additionally, Russell will be required to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life, ensuring ongoing monitoring and restrictions.
