OPENSHAW RAPIST STEVEN EVANS' 'UNDULY LENIENT' SENTENCE INCREASED
A man named Steven Evans, aged 33, from the Openshaw area, has been convicted of multiple serious sexual offenses. His offenses involved spiking women with a substance he called 'magic' before assaulting them sexually while they were unconscious or asleep.
Evans was initially sentenced to 24 years in prison at Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court.
Following a review under the Unduly Lenient Sentences scheme, his sentence was increased by six years, making a total of 30 years behind bars.
Throughout his assaults, Evans caused severe injuries and clandestinely recorded images and videos without the victims' permission.
Greater Manchester Police emphasized that Evans's crimes are of high severity, and the extended prison term aims to provide justice and public confidence.
The investigation began in December 2022 after one victim found images of her being assaulted on her mobile device.
More victims then came forward, describing experiences of coercion, sexual assault, and rape, often following drink-spiking.
Law enforcement officers uncovered 61 images and 35 videos, confirming more than 25 non-consensual sexual acts, including searches related to sleep disorders like sexsomnia.
Evans denied the allegations but was found guilty of all 37 charges levied against him.
He will remain on the sex offenders register for life, face an additional eight-year license period, and has been subject to a restraining order.
The case demonstrates the serious impact of his actions and reinforces the need for justice and protection for victims.
