2012: MAN JAILED FOR ASSAULT ON HIS CHILD’S MOTHER
A WORCESTER man who assaulted the mother of his child was sent to prison for 22 weeks by city magistrates.Steven Dean Scarratt, aged 20, carried out the assault at his home in Cranham Drive, Warndon, on January 10, the court heard.
At a previous hearing he admitted three charges of assault and a further charge of assaulting a constable, stemming from a separate incident.
Prosecutor Kerry Lovegrove told the court that Scarratt’s partner, Sherrie Jade Jones, informed police that on the day of the assaults Scarratt had woken up at about 8.20am and was in a bad mood because he had not had anything to eat.
He insulted her, shouting obscenities and calling her a slag.
Because he was in such a bad mood, she went out to see a friend, but when she came back he started throwing things at her including bottles, videos and CDs.
The assaults escalated and Scarratt punched her, hit her on the head and continued to insult her.
'At one point he said he would strip her and throw her outside to sell herself,' Miss Lovegrove told the magistrates.
'He later threw punches at her head and kicked her shins.' The other charge stemmed from an incident on November 27 last year when Scarratt was being arrested during which he bit one of the police officers leaving marks, but not breaking the skin.
Jason Patel, for Scarratt, said that following the assault Scarratt had been left by his partner and their child had been handed to foster-parents.
'He has to change because he wants to see his son and in that regard he has to engage with the probation process,' said Mr Patel.
Scarratt was sentenced to 22 weeks on each of the three assault charges, to run concurrently.
He was also sentenced to 18 weeks on the resisting arrest charge, also to run concurrently.
A restraining order was also made preventing him from contacting his former partner.
