SEX OFFENDER BEWSICK AVOIDS PRISON AFTER DELETING MESSAGES
A sex offender who previously made ‘lewd and obscene suggestions’ to police officers pretending to be teenage schoolgirls online has appeared again in court.Steven Bewsick, aged 54, was convicted in October 2019 of three offences of attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child after posing as a 17-year-old girl and requesting photos.
He was sentenced to a two-year community order and was subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) for five years, which prohibited him from deleting his internet history.Recently, police found Bewsick at his home near Leek, working on a family farm, after he had deleted Facebook messages and his browsing history.
He admitted to deleting messages he exchanged on Facebook, acknowledging that this was a breach of his SHPO.He pleaded guilty to the breach in court.
His solicitor, Edmund Potts, said Bewsick understood the seriousness of his previous offences and that he had taken steps to address his behavior, including no longer owning a phone.
The court was told that Bewsick's previous compliance with supervision was excellent, and there was a realistic chance of rehabilitation.Judge Graeme Smith sentenced Bewsick to an 18-month community order with a 20-day rehabilitation activity requirement and fined him £200.
The judge remarked that Bewsick had deliberately deleted messages and may not have realized this was a breach, noting his previous full compliance with court orders and describing his remorse.
Bewsick is from Biddulph Road, Horton.
