NORFOLK PHONE SEX WAS SENTENCED
A 42-year-old man who made a string of obscene phone calls was sentenced today.Stephen Whelan targeted women living in Gayton and North Wootton.
He called them at home and made sexually explicit remarks.
The eldest victim, a 90-year-old woman, was left 'shaken and frightened' after Whelan's call, and many others felt vulnerable.
Whelan, of Hawthorn Road, Gayton, denied the offences but was convicted of 10 counts of making nuisance calls after a two-day trial at King's Lynn magistrates' court last month.
The case was adjourned for pre-sentence reports, and Whelan was bailed to appear later at the same court.
Detectives traced the calls to a mobile phone used in the Gayton area, which was listed as a contact for Whelan with a local business.
He was arrested and charged under the Communications Act 2003 for making malicious calls between April 20 and May 4 last year.
Victims' ages ranged from 40 to 90.
The investigation was handled by PCs Maria Lambert and Heather Whitmore.
PC Lambert stated: 'This is an unusual case and the defendant has refused to admit his guilt despite overwhelming evidence.
The calls caused a great deal of upset for some, and we are pleased with this outcome.' The case is set for sentencing, with Whelan being held accountable for his actions.
