HULL MAN JAILED FOR STRANGLING AND ASSAULTING PARTNER IN HOTEL ROOM
A violent incident involving Stephen Shepherd, aged 29, occurred in a hotel room where he was accused of strangling a woman after a night of drinking. The woman, who described feeling 'petrified', was in a relationship with Shepherd for about six months, but they had separated shortly before the incident.
They reconnected and arranged to meet on February 1, during which Shepherd accused her of cheating and physically assaulted her, slapping her across the face.
He then grabbed her around the throat and strangled her, restricting her breathing.
When she tried to leave, he tore her passport in half and told her she was not going anywhere unless with him.
Police responded after the woman's nephew alerted them, and upon arrival, they found her sitting on the bed, visibly distressed.
Shepherd became aggressive toward officers, flailing his hands and pushing a female officer away, even after police used a Taser to subdue him.
Despite being handcuffed, Shepherd continued to be aggressive, trying to stand on the officer's glasses.
The woman expressed her fear that Shepherd might do more harm in the future.
During police interviews, Shepherd made no comment, but it was noted that he had a significant criminal history with 68 previous offences, including assault causing actual bodily harm in 2013, multiple assaults, and offences against police officers.
He was sentenced to two years in prison and received a five-year restraining order.
Shepherd's lawyer said that he has been working on his rehabilitation, feeling at peace offshore, and attempting to rid himself of negative influences.
