Trecenydd Rapist
In November 2020, a disturbing case emerged involving Stephen Sellars, a 62-year-old resident of Trecenydd, Caerphilly, who was found to have engaged in heinous online activities related to child abuse. Sellars, described as an unrepentant paedophile, was convicted of sharing and possessing explicit material involving children, as well as discussing disturbing fantasies about harming minors.
The investigation was initiated after authorities received a tip-off from the National Crime Agency, prompting Gwent Police to scrutinize Sellars's digital footprint. During their inquiry, officers discovered an overwhelming number of child abuse images stored on his mobile device, to the extent that they could no longer keep count. Evidence revealed that Sellars used a pay-as-you-go mobile phone to facilitate his illicit activities, and CCTV footage confirmed that he was seen topping up this phone at a supermarket, indicating ongoing use.
Further examination of his communications uncovered extensive conversations on messaging platforms such as WhatsApp and Wickr. These conversations spanned over 234 pages and included exchanges with like-minded individuals who shared and encouraged each other's disturbing desires. Prosecutor Nicholas Gedge detailed that Sellars openly discussed fantasies involving the rape of children, including explicit descriptions and images. One particularly disturbing film downloaded by Sellars depicted a seemingly unconscious baby boy, which was described as especially “disturbing” by the authorities.
Sellars's online activity also involved explicit images and videos, with authorities revealing that the quantity of child abuse material on his devices was so vast that investigators gave up counting. His conversations revealed a disturbing pattern of fantasizing about and encouraging others in their desires to harm children. He admitted to two counts of distributing indecent images of children, three counts of making such images, and possession of an extreme pornographic image involving an animal.
The defendant’s criminal history includes a previous conviction in 2009 at Carmarthen Crown Court for distributing indecent images of children. His latest offences led to his sentencing at Newport Crown Court, where Judge Timothy Petts described him as a “determined and unrepentant paedophile” who continued to commit “hideous offences.” The judge emphasized that Sellars had played a role in fueling the demand for the sexual abuse of young children and noted the disturbing nature of the images involved, with some being among the most disturbing the police officer had ever encountered.
As a result, Sellars was sentenced to three years and two months in prison. Additionally, he was ordered to register as a sex offender for life, underscoring the severity of his crimes and the ongoing risk he poses to the community.
