DEVON MAN STEPHEN PARSONS JAILED FOR WIFE’S MURDER
A Devon man named Stephen Parsons has been convicted of murdering his wife, Erica Parsons, and has been sentenced to life in prison with a minimum term of 13 years, which is to be reduced due to time served. The incident occurred at their home in Bondleigh in 2023.
Parsons initially claimed that he had killed Erica as part of a suicide pact and that she had begged him to smother her while she was sleeping.
Police were called after Parsons sent a message to a friend stating, ‘by the time you read this we will be dead’.
When emergency services arrived, they found Erica deceased in bed, and Parsons with serious arm injuries.
He was arrested at the scene and later admitted to causing Erica’s death during police interviews.
An autopsy confirmed Erica died from suffocation between 9-10 February, at least 24 hours before Parsons injured himself.
Parsons had lied about their health issues, claiming they had cancer and were undergoing hospital treatment, and about Erica’s alcohol dependence, which was proven false.
He had also claimed they made a pact to die together, but evidence showed Erica was actively making future plans, including going to Crufts.
Parsons pleaded guilty to manslaughter by diminished responsibility, but this was rejected, and he was tried and found guilty of murder.
The judge mentioned that Parsons had been 'profoundly depressed' and under stress, partly due to his illness, which influenced his actions.
Detective Superintendent James Dowler expressed satisfaction with the investigation and said, “Our thoughts are with Erica Parsons and all those who knew her.
Erica loved animals and was heavily involved in caring for dogs and horses throughout her life.
I hope the outcome provides some closure to everyone affected by her death.”
