STEPHEN LANGTON SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEX ABUSE IN NORTHOP AFTER VICTIM'S EMOTIONAL TESTIMONY

In a harrowing case that has left a lasting scar on the victim’s life, Stephen Langton, a man from Northop, was found guilty of heinous sexual offenses committed against a young girl during the 1970s.

The victim, now an adult woman, confronted her attacker in court, her eyes fixed on him as she recounted how his actions had profoundly impacted her entire existence.

Langton, aged 68 and residing at Ffordd Gwynedd in Northop, faced charges of indecency with a child and indecent assault.

He had vehemently denied these allegations, which stemmed from incidents that took place decades ago.

The trial was held at Caernarfon Crown Court, where after a rigorous four-day hearing, the jury swiftly reached a verdict in less than two hours.

They convicted Langton on two counts of indecency and six counts of indecent assault, confirming the severity of his crimes.

The woman, who chose to speak publicly about her ordeal, described the lasting damage inflicted upon her by Langton’s vile acts.

She stated, “This man stole my innocence, my heart and my soul,” emphasizing the profound emotional and psychological toll her abuse had taken.

She expressed her gratitude for finally having the opportunity to confront her abuser and to see justice served, adding, “It is important to see him publicly held to account for his offending.” Despite her courage in speaking out, she revealed that Langton had shown no remorse or shame for his actions.

Her words conveyed a sense of ongoing pain, as she admitted, “I can’t say I will ever be free.” As she returned to the public gallery after her testimony, she looked directly into the dock where Langton sat, her expression a mixture of resolve and sorrow.

Judge David Hale sentenced Langton to seven and a half years in prison.

Additionally, he will be subject to an extended license period of 12 months and is required to register as a sex offender for life.

The judge noted that the sentence was based on the guidelines in effect at the time of the offenses, and he acknowledged that if current guidelines had been available, the sentence might have been longer.

Addressing Langton directly, Judge Hale remarked, “I hope you heard what she said.

She said it to me but wanted you to hear the damage you have caused her the past 40 years.

I hope you heard and I hope, during the next few years, you think why you are where you are.

I hope you have lived in fear this day would come.” The court also heard that Langton had a prior conviction from 1971, when magistrates in Birkenhead sentenced him to 18 months in prison, suspended for two years, after he was convicted of indecently assaulting a schoolgirl on a bus while working as a conductor.

The recent trial revealed that the abuse in the present case took place in a car and a caravan, with the victim confiding in some family members and friends but refraining from reporting the incidents to police until recently.

When police arrested and interviewed Langton, he denied the allegations, claiming they were false.

The case underscores the long-lasting effects of childhood abuse and the importance of justice for victims, regardless of how much time has passed.
