STEPHEN GILES FROM RONKSWOOD ESCAPES JAIL AFTER SEX WITH 14-YEAR-OLD IN WORCESTER

In December 2009, a disturbing case unfolded involving Stephen Giles, a young man from Ronkswood, Worcester, who engaged in sexual activity with a 14-year-old girl he met through an online chatroom. Despite the serious nature of the allegations, Giles was not sentenced to prison but was instead given a community order, raising questions about the judicial handling of such cases.

According to reports, the victim’s mother grew increasingly suspicious of her daughter’s online interactions. Concerned about the nature of her child’s contact with the young man, she contacted Durham police to investigate. During a warning phone call, authorities disclosed the girl’s age to Giles, who was then 19 years old at the time. Despite being informed of her age, Giles chose to ignore the warning and proceeded to meet the girl in person.

The girl traveled from her home in Newcastle upon Tyne by train to Worcester, where she met Giles at his parents’ residence on Mersey Road in Ronkswood. The two then engaged in sexual activity at Giles’ family home. Prosecutor Charles Hamer revealed that the girl’s friends had been involved in a scheme to deceive her mother into believing she was attending a sleepover in her own city, which facilitated her meeting with Giles.

After their encounter, the girl had breakfast with Giles’ family before returning home. She subsequently obtained a morning-after pill from a doctor, indicating her awareness of the situation and her attempt to prevent pregnancy. The case highlighted the complex dynamics of online grooming and the risks faced by young teenagers engaging with older individuals over the internet.

During the court proceedings at Worcester Crown Court, Giles, now 20, pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including sexual activity with a child, sexual grooming, and abduction. The court was told that Giles had no prior convictions, but his actions prompted a serious legal response. The girl’s mother had contacted police in December of the previous year, but online contact persisted, including conversations of a sexual nature. The girl later told police that she had confessed to Giles that she was 16, and her parents allowed her to stay overnight in Giles’ bedroom on January 17 of that year.

Giles was often active on social networking sites such as Facebook and MySpace, which facilitated their communication. When police advised him to cease contact, Giles attempted to block online links, but the girl continued to reach out to him and developed a crush. His defense argued that Giles had a lower-than-average IQ and that a psychologist’s report indicated his emotional maturity was “several years younger” than his actual age. A probation report had assessed him as posing a “high risk” of reoffending, but his lawyer dismissed this, emphasizing Giles’ remorse and regret.

In court, Giles was sentenced to a three-year community order, which included mandatory attendance at a sex offender treatment program. Additionally, he was issued a Sexual Offences Protection Order, prohibiting any contact with girls under 16, and was required to register as a sex offender for five years. Judge Amjad Nawaz stated that there was no evidence of coercion and that the girl was a willing participant in the sexual activity. The judge explained that, given the “peculiar circumstances,” the court believed Giles’ rehabilitation was the best course of action to protect the public. He noted that a custodial sentence would not have allowed enough time for Giles to complete a sex offender’s course, which was deemed essential for his rehabilitation.

Overall, the case underscores the dangers of online grooming and the importance of vigilant parental oversight. It also highlights the complexities faced by the justice system when dealing with young offenders involved in such cases, balancing punishment with opportunities for rehabilitation.
