WOLVERHAMPTON MAN JAILED FOR LIFE IN MANDY FINN MURDER CASE
A 50-year-old man from Wolverhampton, Stephen Dowds, was convicted of murdering his partner Mandy Finn, whose body was found at her home on Newhampton Road in Wolverhampton on November 21, 2010.
He was sentenced to life imprisonment in June, with a minimum term set at 17 years, following his conviction.
Dowds's attempt to appeal the sentence was turned down by a panel of three Court of Appeal judges.
He had argued that his defense should include 'diminished responsibility' due to 'temporary intoxication,' and that recent amendments to the 2009 Homicide Act considered acute intoxication a medical condition that could reduce murder charges to manslaughter.
Lord Justice Hughes explained that Dowds, described as a heavy and 'elective' drinker, claimed he was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the killing and therefore lacked the intent to cause serious harm.
The court clarified that voluntary acute intoxication, from alcohol or other substances, does not qualify as a basis for diminished responsibility.
The judges upheld the original sentence, dismissing Dowds's appeal and maintaining his life imprisonment.
