Gilesgate Rapist
In August 2012, a man named Stephen Carr was sentenced to over ten years in prison for attempting to rape a seven-year-old girl on Wearside. Recognized by police as a dangerous individual, Carr, 43, of Cunningham Place, Gilesgate, Durham, was convicted at Newcastle Crown Court. Judge John Milford QC sentenced him to 10 years and nine months behind bars.
Carr had pleaded guilty to charges of attempted rape and indecency, which allowed the victim to avoid recounting her traumatic experience in court. The young girl provided a graphic statement to police, describing the assault during the attempted rape.
Prosecutor Robin Patton noted, βShe asked him to stop. He was persistent.β
Northumbria Police Detective Constable David Garrity emphasized the importance of reporting such crimes, stating, βIβd urge any victim of a sexual assault or rape β no matter how historic β to report it to the police. We will investigate all reports and do everything we can to bring sexual offenders to justice.β
He further remarked, βCarr is a dangerous individual and this sentence reflects the seriousness of the crimes he committed. It took great courage for the victim to come forward, and I hope this sentence gives her some closure following what has been an extremely difficult time.β
