POLICE INVESTIGATING FORMER SNP HOLYROOD CANDIDATE OVER ALLEGED SEXUAL OFFENCES
A former SNP candidate for Holyrood is under investigation over alleged sexual offences.Police Scotland confirmed a probe had been launched into allegations made in Edinburgh and Cupar, Fife.
Stefan Hoggan – who now sits as an independent councillor in Fife – quit as a candidate and member of the SNP earlier this month after a complaint about alleged misconduct, meaning the party halted its investigation into him.
The former para-athlete has strongly rejected the allegations.
Posting on social media on Tuesday, he said: “I completely refute the allegations in the media today.
They are part of a vile and disgusting vendetta against me and I am fully co-operating with the police.
I will make a full statement in due course.” A Police Scotland spokesman said: “Officers are investigating a report of sexual offences committed in the Cupar and Edinburgh areas which was received in March 2026.
Inquiries are at an early stage and remain ongoing.” The SNP advised the complainant that whilst the party would progress a complaint about safeguarding, any alleged criminal behaviour would be rightly a matter for the police.
Advice and support was offered to the complainant on how to progress a complaint to the police.
