COVENTRY UNIVERSITY STUDENT JAILED FOR EXCHANGING CHILD ABUSE IMAGES
Martyn Lee, a 54-year-old lecturer at Coventry University, pleaded guilty to six charges of creating and sharing indecent images of children.Conversely, Sophie Nightingale, a 23-year-old student from Hixon in Staffordshire, admitted to four such counts.
The evidence showed that both had shared images depicting child abuse, ranging in severity from category C to A, with category A being the most explicit.
It was revealed in court that Lee, who resides in Meriden, Solihull, had been dismissed from his teaching role following a disciplinary process in 2014.
Nightingale, meanwhile, was no longer enrolled at the university at the time of the offences.
Both individuals received a sentence of five years on the sex offenders register and were subject to three-year community orders.
The judge noted that Nightingale appeared particularly vulnerable due to personal circumstances, which contributed to the decision not to incarcerate her.
This factor also influenced the court’s sentence for Lee.
Detective Constable Hannah Millington, speaking for the police, emphasized the disturbing nature of the images, pointing out their explicitness.
She added that the offences occurred privately and were not known to the university until authorities became involved, prompting swift disciplinary measures.
