GREATER MANCHESTER POLICE OFFICER WHO HAD SEX WITH RAPE VICTIM SENTENCED TO JAIL
A police officer working for Greater Manchester Police, Simon Rose, aged 48, has been sentenced to three years in jail for having a secret sexual relationship with a rape victim.Rose, who had been with GMP since 2007, met the victim in May 2012 as part of his official duties handling allegations of rape and sexual assault.
The relationship lasted for several years and was kept hidden until October 2019, when police searched the woman’s home for firearms and found evidence of their affair.
During the trial, the court heard that Rose had asked colleagues to ignore any findings to conceal his relationship.
Judge David Swinnerton described Rose as having exploited a vulnerable victim, stating he took advantage of her.
The judge emphasized that such misconduct damages public trust in the police, stating, 'Police officers behaving like you did damages trust in the whole police service and it is to the detriment of every single police officer and society as a whole.' Rose was convicted of misconduct in a public office and attempting to pervert the course of justice.
Additionally, the court noted his motivation was to hide his shameful secret.
After sentencing, representatives from the police watchdog, the Independent Office for Police Conduct, condemned Rose’s actions, highlighting that he exploited a vulnerable woman and that his attempt to cover up was unacceptable.
GMP’s Deputy Chief Constable, Terry Woods, affirmed that misconduct proceedings would follow this conviction, underlining the importance of accountability in policing.
The case underscores the damaging impact of such predatory behavior on victims and public trust, with authorities stressing that misconduct by officers must be taken seriously.
