2008: MAN WHO RAPED MUM IS JAILED FOR 10 YEARS
2008: A 54-year-old man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison after raping a woman on wasteground in Lower Ince.Silas Thompson, a resident of Westwood Lane, Lower Ince, admitted to two counts of rape during a hearing at Liverpool Crown Court on December 17, and was also ordered to register as a sex offender.
The incident involved a 29-year-old woman who was out with a friend on August 15.
She decided to visit the Lower Ince Labour Club on Alfred Street to purchase cigarettes.
Although the club was closing as she arrived, she spoke with Thompson, who offered to help her find cigarettes.
They then went to a nearby house, where the owner said they had no cigarettes.
Thompson then suggested trying another house, and as they approached some wasteground off Westwood Lane, he suddenly grabbed her, dragging her 300 metres down an alley.
Despite her attempts to resist, including biting his hand, Thompson overpowered her, and she was subjected to two rapes.
After the assault, they walked back along Cemetery Road, where Thompson said he planned to hang himself.
He later turned himself in to police.
During interviews, he admitted to having consensual sex with the woman but claimed she had consented.
Detective Constable Kevin Telford from Wigan CID described the attack as cowardly and disturbing.
He praised the victim for her bravery in providing detailed descriptions despite the trauma and noted the rarity of such offenses.
Telford encouraged victims to report incidents to authorities, ensuring their identities remain confidential and supportive services are available.
