2003: WOMAN JAILED OVER DOG CASE
The mother of a man who claimed to have found an extremely emaciated dog in Woodrow, a dog that later needed to be euthanized, has received a six-month prison sentence for causing the animal unnecessary suffering.Shirley Mentos, 53, of Astley Close, Woodrow, appeared before magistrates in Kidderminster on Thursday.
In addition to her jail term, she was handed a lifelong ban on owning animals and has already filed an appeal against her sentence.
In March of the previous year, her son Jason, age 27, reported locating a neglected dog abandoned on the grounds of Dingleside Middle School.
He stated that he brought the dog, a Collie crossbreed, back to his residence and contacted Redditch Council’s dog warden for assistance.
However, it was eventually uncovered that her mistreatment contributed to the dog’s severe condition, which ultimately led to its death.
Earlier this year, Mentos was also sentenced to six months in prison.
RSPCA Inspector Simon Dix commented: "This was the most severe case I have worked on in my 18 years with the RSPCA, and it affected everyone involved." He explained that the dog, named Titan and estimated to be between two and three years old, appeared to have been starved to death with no apparent reason or explanation.
Mr.
Dix further stated that these cases came to light following an appeal published in the Redditch Advertiser.
