SHAUN SIMMS FROM KELFIEDL PUNISHED FOR CRUELTY TO REX THE PUPPY IN YORK
Shaun Simms, born on June 22, 1968, and residing at Pond View in the village of Kelfield near York, has been found guilty of animal cruelty involving a young husky cross puppy named Rex. The case drew significant attention after neighbors reported hearing distressing sounds over a period of five weeks, during which Rex was subjected to repeated attacks. These neighbors went as far as recording audio clips that captured Rex’s yelping and cries of pain, some of which also included the voices of children, raising concerns about the welfare of the animal.Authorities, specifically the RSPCA, responded to these reports and launched an investigation into the matter. It was during this investigation that Shaun Simms and his wife, Emma Simms, became the focus of the case. Although Emma Simms was also prosecuted, her plea of 'not guilty' was accepted by the court, despite her voice being audible on some of the recordings. Shaun Simms, on the other hand, was directly implicated in the abuse and neglect of Rex.
Rex was taken into the care of the RSPCA following the allegations and has since made a mostly full recovery. However, the trauma of the abuse has left him very nervous and anxious, a common consequence for animals subjected to prolonged cruelty. The case was covered extensively in local media, including the York Press, which provided detailed insights into the proceedings and the court’s findings.
During the trial, the court heard that Shaun Simms was not the official owner of Rex at the time of the abuse. Nonetheless, he was convicted of neglecting the basic needs of the dog, specifically failing to ensure Rex’s protection from pain, injury, suffering, and disease, which are fundamental responsibilities under the Animal Welfare Act 2006. The court also examined allegations that Simms attempted to prevent Rex from exhibiting natural behaviors, but he was acquitted of that particular charge.
In sentencing, Shaun Simms was ordered to pay a total fine of £962. Additionally, he received a four-year ban from owning or keeping any dogs, a restriction that will remain in effect until February 2026. This disqualification was part of the court’s effort to prevent further animal cruelty and ensure public safety. It is noteworthy that no deprivation order was issued for Rex, as Shaun Simms was not the legal owner of the dog at the time of the incident.
Emma Simms faced separate allegations related to her failure to meet the needs of Rex, including not providing adequate care to ensure the dog could exhibit normal behavior and was protected from pain and suffering. However, these charges were dismissed during the hearing held on February 7, 2022.
As of August 2022, Shaun and Emma Simms are believed to have relocated to Sherburn in Elmet, Leeds LS25, indicating a possible move following the legal proceedings. The case highlights ongoing concerns about animal welfare and the importance of accountability for those responsible for the care of domestic animals in the UK.
