Donegal Rapist
Shaun O’Donnell, a man originally from Leeds, has been convicted and sentenced for a serious sexual offence that took place in Donegal. The court proceedings revealed that O’Donnell, aged 34, was found guilty of raping a woman while she was asleep beside her partner and their newborn baby at a private residence in Donegal.

The incident occurred in 2021, following a night of social drinking at the victim’s home. O’Donnell had stayed over that night, and the following morning, he entered the woman’s bed and committed the assault. The woman initially mistook him for her partner, which made the assault even more traumatic when she realized it was O’Donnell. She quickly fled the scene, overwhelmed by the shock and horror of what had transpired.

During the trial, it was revealed that O’Donnell had a criminal history that included previous involvement in assault and dangerous driving. Despite these past offences, he denied the charges related to the sexual assault, claiming that he did not remember the events of that night. His defense did not succeed in convincing the court of his innocence.

The presiding judge, Mr. Justice David Keane, described O’Donnell’s actions as a 'fundamental, almost indescribable breach of trust.' The severity of the offence was emphasized by the judge, who sentenced O’Donnell to eight years in prison. The court made it clear that no part of this sentence would be suspended, underscoring the gravity of the crime.

In addition to the primary sentence, O’Donnell received a concurrent term of two years and eight months for sexual assault. This means that both sentences will run simultaneously, but the overall impact on his freedom remains significant.

During the trial, the victim delivered a powerful statement, describing the emotional and physical trauma she endured as a result of the assault. She spoke openly about how her confidence was shattered and how the experience has profoundly affected her mental health and her family life. Her words highlighted the devastating impact of the crime, with her describing it as the worst moment of her life.

The judge praised her statement as 'impressively written and deeply affecting,' recognizing her strength and resilience as a victim. Throughout the proceedings, O’Donnell was supported in court by his long-term partner, with whom he shares children, a detail that added to the emotional complexity of the case. The court’s decision reflects the serious nature of the offence and the importance of justice for the victim in Donegal.
