SHAUN MCCORMICK DEVASTATES NEWQUAY WITH FIRE AFTER TEN MONTHS OF ABUSE
A woman and her young son faced the heartbreaking loss of their home after enduring nearly a year of relentless and violent abuse at the hands of her former partner, Shaun McCormick.The incident unfolded in Newquay, where McCormick's actions culminated in a devastating act of arson that destroyed her caravan, obliterated all her possessions, and resulted in the tragic death of one of her beloved pets.
Katheryn Wills, aged 44, recounted her harrowing experience during an interview with the BBC, describing the emotional and physical toll of the ordeal.
She revealed, "Every time he said he loved me and he was sorry and he didn't mean to do what he did and he'd never do it again.
It's been quite a horrific ten months to be fair." Initially, Katheryn believed McCormick was the partner she had hoped for, but her perception changed dramatically as alcohol consumption by McCormick led to a pattern of escalating verbal and physical violence.
The abuse intensified over time, with one particularly terrifying incident where she was chased through the countryside, completely naked, fleeing from her attacker.
The court heard that McCormick assaulted Katheryn multiple times, including instances where he placed his hands around her neck in an attempt to strangle her.
The situation reached a critical point in December 2024, when Katheryn and her son decided to leave their home after receiving threatening messages from McCormick.
Just two days after their departure, McCormick set her mobile home ablaze using petrol.
He later admitted to police that he committed the act while intoxicated.
The judge overseeing the case emphasized that McCormick's drinking was at the root of his violent behavior, highlighting the profound impact of his actions on Katheryn's life.
The judge stated, "Every picture, every book, every child memory was destroyed.
One of her cats died in that fire.
You did all this to hurt her as much as you could." As a consequence, Shaun McCormick was sentenced to six years in prison.
The court determined that he must serve two-thirds of his sentence before being eligible for release.
Additionally, a restraining order was issued to prevent any further contact or harassment, aiming to protect Katheryn and her son from future harm.
