Enfield Rapist
In a disturbing series of events stemming from the Notting Hill Carnival, two men from Enfield have been convicted of heinous sexual offenses involving teenage girls they met during the event.
Shane Wyllie, aged 25 and residing on Auckland Close in Enfield, was found guilty of raping two teenage girls at his residence last year. His accomplice, Linvan Jaisingh, aged 21 and living on Stoneleigh Avenue in Enfield, was convicted of raping one girl at his home and also of perverting the course of justice.
The convictions followed a detailed three-week trial at Wood Green Crown Court, where evidence was presented from three teenage victims. The court heard that Wyllie had met a 16-year-old girl at the Notting Hill Carnival the previous year. After exchanging contact details, they maintained communication for about a week, culminating in her agreeing to meet him. Wyllie then picked her up from her home and took her back to his house, where she was subsequently raped in his room.
Following this assault, Wyllie drove the girl to Wembley railway station, stopping along the way to meet Jaisingh, who was following in his own vehicle. After leaving the 16-year-old girl at the station, Wyllie contacted another girl, aged 17, whom he had also met at the carnival, and arranged to meet her nearby.
The 17-year-old girl, not wanting to face the meeting alone, brought along a 16-year-old friend. The three met Wyllie and Jaisingh at a fast food restaurant around 10:30 pm. Believing they were heading to a house party, the girls entered separate cars with the men. However, Wyllie then began driving towards his home, and when the girl expressed her concerns, his mood shifted ominously. He warned her, saying, “Don’t stress me out; you will not like me when I am stressed.”
On the way, Wyllie stopped at a fast food outlet, providing the girl an opportunity to call a friend and express her fear. She had to end the call when Wyllie returned to the vehicle. Once at his home, Wyllie prevented her from leaving, assaulted her by punching her in the face, and then raped her.
Meanwhile, Jaisingh drove the 17-year-old girl to his residence, where he locked the door and made unwanted sexual advances. She resisted his advances, but he ultimately raped her. After the assault, she managed to distract him and retrieve the key to the door from his pocket before fleeing.
The investigation was initiated by detectives from the Metropolitan Police’s Sexual Offences, Exploitation and Child Abuse Command after the first victim reported being raped. Wyllie was quickly identified as the suspect, arrested, and interviewed on September 5. During questioning, he denied the allegations, claiming the girl had consented.
As the investigation progressed, Jaisingh was identified as a witness to Wyllie’s first attack. He provided a false name and gave a misleading statement to officers. When the second victim and her friend reported the assaults, both men were re-arrested, and Jaisingh’s false statement was uncovered.
Both Wyllie and Jaisingh were convicted at trial. Wyllie received a sentence of 14 years in prison and was ordered to register as a sex offender for life. Jaisingh was sentenced to eight years and also mandated to sign the sex offenders’ register for life.
Detective Constable Dal Riyat, who led the investigation, stated, “Both Wyllie and Jaisingh are sexual predators who I believe had intentions of having sex with these girls, with or without their consent, as soon as they met. In particular, I am confident they plotted together to separate the second and third victims with the sole aim of raping them that day.
Neither has shown any remorse for their actions and both have lied repeatedly throughout this process. I want to commend the girls who displayed remarkable courage and strength in coming forward to report their experiences. I cannot rule out the possibility that other women may have been assaulted by Wyllie or Jaisingh, and I hope that any victims who have not yet come forward will now feel empowered to do so.”
