SHANE POTTS FROM FURNESS VALE FACES PRISON OVER HORRIFIC DOG NEGLECT CRISIS

A tragic case of animal cruelty has unfolded in Furness Vale, where Shane Potts, aged 29, was held accountable for the severe neglect and suffering of his pet dogs. The distressing incident came to light when RSPCA inspector Lorna Campbell responded to a call at Potts' residence, revealing a scene of unimaginable neglect and suffering.

Upon arrival at the property, the inspector observed a heartbreaking sight through a window: Simba, one of the dogs, appeared extremely emaciated, with his ribs and bones clearly visible, indicating prolonged starvation. Inside the house, the inspector found the remains of Nala, the other dog, who had tragically died from starvation. The interior of the home was in a deplorable state, cluttered with shredded dog food bags, a tub of gravy granules, and chewed towels scattered across the floor, painting a grim picture of neglect.

Despite the presence of dog biscuits placed on a high worktop—likely an attempt by the animals to find food—the dogs could not access them, highlighting the extent of their suffering and the barriers to their basic needs. The scene underscored the neglectful environment in which the animals had been kept, with the conditions so dire that one dog had resorted to eating its deceased companion to survive.

During the investigation, Shane Potts, who is from Chinley, Derbyshire, admitted to causing unnecessary suffering to his pets under the Animal Welfare Act 2006. His admission led to a court hearing where he was sentenced to 18 weeks in prison. Additionally, he was banned from owning any animals for a period of ten years and was ordered to pay £500 in legal costs. The court was informed that Potts had left the animals alone after moving out of the property, which contributed to the neglectful circumstances that led to this tragic outcome.

Fortunately, Simba has since been rescued, recovered from his ordeal, and found a new, caring home. The case serves as a stark reminder of the serious consequences that come with animal neglect and cruelty, emphasizing the importance of animal welfare laws and the need for vigilance in protecting vulnerable pets from such horrific treatment.
