SHANE DEGRAAG FROM BROMLEY AND HAYES SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEX OFFENCES IN CROYDON
In a case that has sent shockwaves through the local communities of Bromley and Hayes, Shane Degraag, a 20-year-old man, was sentenced to two years in prison after admitting to serious child sex offences.The court proceedings took place at Croydon Crown Court, where Degraag faced charges related to his inappropriate conduct involving a seven-year-old girl.
Degraag, who resides on Abbotsbury Road in Hayes, pleaded guilty to engaging in sexual activity with the young girl, an act that has understandably caused significant concern among residents and authorities alike.
In addition to this, he also admitted to possessing and making indecent images, with a total of 11 charges linked to such material.
The court was informed that Degraag had taken the step of turning himself in to the police on January 4, a move that was considered crucial in the progression of the case.
His solicitor, Tamia Tagon, highlighted that without Degraag’s full confession and cooperation, the evidence necessary to substantiate the charges would have been difficult to establish.
This acknowledgment underscores the importance of his decision to come forward, although it does little to mitigate the severity of his actions.
Judge Nicholas Ainley, presiding over the case, delivered his sentence on Wednesday, May 28.
In his remarks, he emphasized the gravity of the offences and the potential danger Degraag poses to the public.
The judge made it clear that Degraag would be subject to lifelong supervision through a license condition and would be permanently barred from working with children in any capacity.
Judge Ainley stated, “I am driven to the conclusion there is a significant risk to the public of serious harm by you,” highlighting the judge’s concern for community safety and the need for stringent measures to prevent any future harm.
The sentence reflects the court’s recognition of the serious nature of the crimes committed and the ongoing threat that individuals like Degraag can pose to vulnerable members of society.
