MAN JAILED FOR EIGHT YEARS FOR RAPE AND COERCIVE CONTROL OF HIS WIFE

A man aged 48 has been sentenced to eight years in prison for the crimes of rape and coercive control against his wife.

Sergio Correia, who resides on Front Street in Ardara, County Donegal, was convicted by a jury earlier this year.

His ex-wife, Kathleen Correia, chose to waive her right to remain anonymous and emphasized that victims should not be afraid to speak out about abuse occurring behind closed doors.

The court learned that Kathleen and Sergio Correia met in Portugal in 2006 and married in 2012.

Judge Melanie Greally noted that their marriage faced difficulties early on, particularly with Sergio’s expectations regarding sexual activity.

In 2018, the couple moved to Portugal but found the arrangement unsuccessful, leading them to return to Ireland.

Following their return, the judge explained, Correia became increasingly angry over worsening financial and living conditions, which he blamed on his wife.

He also concealed a drug habit, and was described as moody and irritable.

The court heard that Correia viewed sex as a right and threatened his wife if her responses did not meet his demands, including statements like "you got away with it last night, you won’t get away with it tonight" if she refused sex.

In 2019, Ms.

Correia’s mental health deteriorated sharply, leading to weight loss and an eating disorder.

The allegations of rape surfaced during her mental health treatment.

The jury found Correia guilty of two counts of rape in 2019, specifically for anal rape incidents despite his wife’s objections and pleas for him to stop.

Judge Greally highlighted the impact of these offences, citing Ms.

Correia’s victim impact statement, which detailed her grief, fear, and sense of betrayal.

She described her marriage as a place of danger rather than love, with her husband’s control and abuse causing profound emotional suffering.

Ms.

Correia shared that discussing her ordeal with her children was extremely difficult and reliving the events during court proceedings was extremely painful.

The judge acknowledged the devastating effect of Correia’s actions on his wife and children, noting his lack of remorse and insight, and referencing a report indicating his potential to reoffend if unaddressed.

A probation report highlighted the risk of continued offending, while a mental health report revealed Correia’s history of cancer treatment and a prior suicide attempt.

Sentencing, Judge Greally imposed a nine-and-a-half-year prison term, with the final year suspended conditional on his participation in treatment programs and adherence to probation.

Outside court, Ms.

Correia expressed a mix of relief and sadness, affirming her decision to publicly identify herself as a survivor and advocating for awareness that abuse should not be hidden behind social stigmas.

Inspector Yvonne Martin praised Ms.

Correia’s bravery and reminded victims that no one should accept abuse as part of marriage, encouraging anyone suffering to seek help and recognize their right to consent and safety.
