ABERDEEN RAPIST SENTENCED TO SEVEN YEARS IN PRISON FOR VIOLENT ASSAULT
A violent offender from Aberdeen named Sean Wyness has been sentenced to seven years in prison for a brutal rape.Wyness, aged 34, appeared before the High Court in Aberdeen to be sentenced after being convicted of raping a woman during the early hours of May 15, 2022.
The incident occurred when Wyness dragged the victim into the grounds of St Clement’s Church and subjected her to a violent rape, seizing her by the hair, pinning her against a wall, pulling down her clothes, and raping her.
His defense solicitor acknowledged that the offence was severe and that the defendant’s actions caused significant trauma to the victim.
Wyness was found guilty following a jury trial conducted earlier this year.
Judge Graham Buchanan declared that only a custodial sentence was appropriate, and he handed Wyness a nine-year extended sentence, of which he will serve seven years in prison.
Additionally, Wyness will spend two years on licence in the community upon release.
The court also ordered Wyness to be placed on the sex offenders register for life.
Judge Buchanan commented, "You were convicted by the jury of rape, and the evidence showed this was a very nasty offence in which you used a significant degree of violence against your victim.
The victim’s statement indicates she continues to suffer psychological trauma as a result of what you did." The judge emphasized that the severity of the offence justified a substantial prison term.
Following the sentence, Detective Inspector Ryan Morris of Police Scotland remarked on Wyness' prison stay and commended the victim for her strength in coming forward.
He also urged others to report any incidents of violence or sexual offences.
Defense lawyer David Moggach stated that his client, who had only one previous conviction for malicious mischief, was aware of the seriousness of the offence.
Overall, Wyness's case highlights the court's stance on violent sexual offences, and his conviction underscores the lasting impact such crimes have on victims.
