GALWAY MAN JAILED FOR DECADES OF SEXUAL ABUSE OF YOUNG GIRL
A Galway man, Sean Kinneavy, aged 74, has been sentenced to prison for the "persistent and deplorable" sexual abuse of a girl significantly younger than him.The court found Kinneavy guilty of 47 counts of sexual assault and two counts of rape using an object, committed between January 2013 and June 2018 at locations in Dublin and Galway.
The victim, whose identity is protected, was between 10 and 15 years old at the time, while Kinneavy was between 62 and 67.
The abuse was frequent and involved inappropriate touching, digital penetration, and rape using sex toys during visits to his home in Galway in the summer of 2017.
The victim recounts that Kinneavy described some of his actions as "massages" and used a code gesture for these massages, which he performed regularly.
His wife once saw him exiting the girl’s bedroom, claiming he had been watching her use her iPad.
The crimes came to light in 2020 after the victim’s mother found a note indicating the abuse while the girl was hospitalized for mental health issues.
The court heard that Kinneavy was well known to the victim's family and was a regular visitor to their Dublin home, with the girl estimating he sexually abused her during his visits about once a month.
Throughout the trial, Kinneavy maintained his innocence and did not show remorse.
Judge David Keane highlighted the seriousness of the offenses, noting their breach of trust and the ongoing impact on the victim, who he described as a "vulnerable child." The judge characterized the crimes as "persistent and deplorable," emphasizing the calculated nature of the abuse, with Kinneavy exploiting his outward respectability.
Kinneavy was sentenced to nine years for the rape offenses and eight years for sexual assaults, to run concurrently, with the sentence backdated to November 2022 when he was taken into custody.
Additionally, he received a two-year supervised release order.
The court acknowledged his age and good character as mitigating factors but dismissed testimonials submitted on his behalf as having little weight given the circumstances.
The judge underscored that the offending was not isolated but involved repeated acts over several years, and assessed Kinneavy at a low to medium risk of reoffending.
A victim impact statement was read in court, revealing that the abuse had profoundly affected her life, leaving her feeling unsafe and causing her family significant financial loss, including around €24,000 in lost income.
The survivor expressed that her childhood was "shattered" and that she will never know the life she "could and should have had" had the abuse not occurred.
The court sentenced Kinneavy to a total of nine years in prison, with a further two years of post-release supervision, reflecting the gravity of his crimes and their devastating effects on the victim and her family.
