SAMMY SMYLIE FROM BALLINTOY SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEX OFFENCES IN ANTRIM
In a significant case that has shocked the community of Ballintoy, Sammy Smylie, a 60-year-old resident of Larrybane Park, has been sentenced to a decade behind bars after admitting to a series of serious sexual offences involving minors. The case was brought before Antrim Crown Court in July, where Smylie pleaded guilty to a total of 26 charges that spanned over a decade, from 2006 to 2017.The charges against Smylie included a disturbing array of offences involving three different victims—two males and one female. Among these charges were three counts of rape against a male victim, nine counts of sexual assault, and two counts of false imprisonment. Additionally, Smylie faced two charges of indecent assault on a male, as well as a charge of gross indecency with a male. The most alarming allegations involved five counts of causing or inciting a child under the age of 13, identified as a boy, to engage in sexual activity.
The court heard that these offences occurred over a period of several years, with the earliest charges relating to incidents in 2009 and the most recent in June of this year. Smylie’s criminal conduct has been described as deeply disturbing, and his guilty plea has brought some measure of closure to the victims and their families.
Having previously served time in prison, Smylie was sentenced to serve five years in custody, followed by an additional five years on licence. The judge also imposed a sexual offences prevention order that will remain in effect for eight years, explicitly prohibiting Smylie from having any unsupervised contact or access to children under 16 or any vulnerable adults. Furthermore, Smylie will be registered on the sex offenders register indefinitely, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities and restrictions.
This case underscores the ongoing efforts of law enforcement and judicial authorities to protect vulnerable members of society and hold offenders accountable for their heinous crimes.
