BRADFORD'S SAIMA BI AND KIRAN HUSSAIN SENTENCED FOR CRUELTY TO DOG IN MANNINGHAM AND WEST BOWLING
In a disturbing case of animal cruelty, Saima Bi, born on May 19, 1986, residing at Sunderland Road in Manningham, Bradford, and Kiran Hussain, born on October 9, 1993, of Ackworth Street in West Bowling, faced justice for their neglectful treatment of a Staffordshire bull terrier-type dog named Bella. The incident, which drew significant public concern, took place in July 2012 and highlighted the severe conditions in which the dog was kept.According to reports, a concerned member of the public contacted the RSPCA after observing the dog living in a car parked outside Bi and Hussain’s then residence in Manningham. The vehicle, a Seat, was found to be in a deplorable state, covered in faeces and emitting a strong, overwhelming smell. Inside, Bella was discovered lying beside her own excrement, curled up on the car seat. The couple had refused to allow the dog into their home, leaving her confined in the filthy vehicle.
When RSPCA Inspector Sarah Brisco arrived to investigate, she was met with a heartbreaking sight. Bella was extremely emaciated, so much so that she appeared to be near death. The inspector described her as almost skeletal, with ribs and hip bones protruding sharply through her thin skin. The interior of the car was strewn with faeces, and flies were swarming around the area, underscoring the neglect and poor conditions Bella endured.
Prosecutor Nigel Monaghan emphasized the severity of the situation, stating that the smell inside the vehicle was “overwhelming” and that Inspector Brisco had “never in all her experience seen a dog so thin.” Bella’s condition was a stark reminder of the cruelty inflicted upon her by her owners. Despite her suffering, Bella was fortunate to survive her ordeal.
Initially, Bi had insisted she wanted Bella back, claiming she was a guard dog and loved her. However, she eventually signed Bella over to the RSPCA, allowing the organization to find her a new, caring home. During the court proceedings, her defense solicitor, Zanfar Khan, expressed remorse on behalf of both Bi and Hussain, stating that they “held their hands up to show remorse and upset.” The defense also claimed that it was Bella who had entered the car and that her alleged violence made it difficult to remove her.
Following the sentencing, RSPCA Inspector Brisco reported that Bella was now doing well and recovering from her traumatic experience. The court handed down a sentence of 100 hours of unpaid work to each of the defendants, along with five days of low-level activity requirements. Additionally, both Bi and Hussain were ordered to pay costs of £260 each. They were also banned from keeping animals for a period of five years, although this ban expired in 2017.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of animal welfare and the consequences of neglect and cruelty, especially in the Bradford area, which includes Manningham and West Bowling, where the incident took place.
