RYAN MURRELL FROM BURTON LATIMER ESCAPES JAIL AFTER ONLINE SEX OFFENSES INVOLVING TEEN GIRLS IN NORTHAMPTONSHIRE
In a case that has sent shockwaves through the Northamptonshire community, Ryan Murrell, a 25-year-old resident of Sturgess Court in Burton Latimer, was found to have engaged in disturbing online activities involving underage girls.Despite possessing a significant collection of illicit images and videos, Murrell was spared immediate imprisonment, though he faces strict restrictions and a lengthy registration requirement.
Back in May 2019, police officers from Northamptonshire visited Murrell’s residence after receiving information about his online behavior.
During the visit, officers issued a caution and discovered a mobile device hidden under his bed.
A subsequent examination of this device revealed a disturbing cache of indecent images and videos of children, categorized into different levels of depravity.
Specifically, authorities uncovered 18 images classified as Category A, indicating the most severe material, along with 12 Category B files and 45 Category C files.
Among these were 23 short videos depicting inappropriate content involving minors.
Additionally, police found 234 cartoons portraying children engaged in sexual acts, further highlighting the extent of Murrell’s disturbing interests.
Murrell was interviewed by detectives from Northamptonshire Police, during which he admitted to spending considerable time online, gaming, and participating in chatrooms on Kik, a popular messaging platform.
He openly acknowledged a sexual interest in girls aged 14 and above.
During the interview, he explained that the images he possessed were related to conversations with approximately eight or nine females online, some of whom initially claimed to be 18 but later revealed they were as young as 16.
Despite realizing that some of these girls were minors, Murrell continued to communicate with them, sending nude images of himself and keeping any images he received for his own sexual gratification.
Prosecutor Jeremy Janes outlined that Murrell’s online activity spanned roughly two years prior to his arrest.
He explained that Murrell would exchange explicit images with the girls and retain these images on his phone.
Murrell’s interactions included explicit chats with a girl who initially claimed to be 18 but later disclosed she was only 16, yet he persisted in messaging her even after learning her true age.
Murrell, who had no previous criminal record, faced multiple charges, including three counts of making indecent images of children and one count of possessing prohibited images.
During the hearing at Leicester Crown Court, His Honour Judge David Herbert QC sentenced Murrell to a suspended prison term of eight months, which will not be served unless he breaches the conditions set by the court.
Furthermore, a sexual harm prevention order was imposed for ten years, restricting his access to electronic devices and contact with females under 18.
Murrell will also be required to register as a sex offender and participate in rehabilitation programs aimed at addressing his offending behavior.
Judge Herbert issued a stern warning to Murrell, stating, “You come back in front of me and you won’t get a second chance,” emphasizing the seriousness of his actions and the importance of ongoing supervision and treatment to prevent future offenses.
