DANGER TO WOMEN WITH HISTORY OF VIOLENCE JAILED AGAIN AFTER THREATS
A SERIAL offender with a history of violence towards women is back behind bars after threats were made to another female victim.A judge previously told Ryan Jarvis that he has a ‘pattern of extremely worrying behaviour towards women’, with previous convictions in his name against three different women.
The 39-year-old has now made this a fourth woman after admitting a charge of harassment with a fear of violence on the day of his trial.
Warrington Magistrates’ Court heard from prosecutor Lynne Sayers how Jarvis’ behaviour occurred in Warrington between November 26 and 29 last year.
He caused a woman to fear that violence would be used against her through his course of conduct, in that he sent abusive text messages threatening her, her family and her friends.
He was last locked up in May 2023 after a former girlfriend feared he would ‘beat her to death’, leaving her ‘cowering with fear’ in her own home.
Jarvis left the woman with bruising, swelling and carpet burns after dragging her around her flat by her hair after kicking the door in.
He banged on her door repeatedly and ‘bombarded’ her with text messages, voicemails and Facebook messages, calling her a ‘rat’ and threatening to harm her family.
Jarvis again attended her home and began banging on the door, before kicking it through and grabbing the complainant as she tried to run away.
The defendant grabbed her by the hair and began pulling her around the flat, before smashing her phone on the floor and telling her that he would ‘stab her’.
This left the victim ‘physically shaking and cowering’ as she ‘fully believed he could kill her’, but he then left.
The court heard how the complainant suffered swollen and bruised lips, as well as a sore head and neck.
She also suffered bruising to her chest and finger, and carpet burns after being dragged around.
In an impact statement, the victim said she had been ‘traumatised’, was fearful of further violence and had to barricade herself in her flat with fridge-freezer in front of the door, which was reinforced with wood, to prevent him from gaining entry again.
It was revealed during that hearing that the defendant had 20 previous court appearances showing a similar pattern involving violence, from 1999 onwards.
Before jailing him for two years and seven months, judge Robert Trevor Jones said: “There is a pattern of similar behaviour that you have shown on previous occasions with at least two other female partners, which is an extremely worrying tendency.” For the latest harassment matter, chair magistrate Ian Williams said that the severity of the offence, paired with the domestic context, meant that the custody threshold had been crossed.
It was also said that the defendant was on licence from prison when he offended, with the Probation Service deeming him to pose a ‘high risk’ to others.
Jarvis, of Warrington Road in Penketh, was sentenced to 22 weeks in prison, to be served immediately.
He was also handed a restraining order prohibiting him from contacting the victim by any means, including via social media, or entering a named Warrington street, for the next three years.
