TEENAGER JAILED FOR BRUTAL MURDER OF STEPMUM WITH AXE AND SWORD
Reuben Brathwaite, aged 17, was found guilty of a brutal murder involving his stepmother Fiona Scourfield at Broadmoor Farm in Laugharne, Carmarthenshire, on March 6.It was reported that in the months prior to the incident, Brathwaite had developed an obsession with violent online content, including videos depicting beheadings, suicides, and mass killings.
During the court proceedings, evidence was presented indicating that his fascination with extreme violence played a role in his deadly actions.
He lured Ms.
Scourfield outside after her school day, then repeatedly struck her with an axe and later used a samurai sword, which had been taken from his father's bed, to cut her throat.
Following the murder, he contacted the police to admit to the crime, stating he was tired of life and saw killing his stepmother as a way to escape.
The presiding judge described the attack as 'savage' and against a defenseless victim, and Brathwaite was sentenced at Swansea Crown Court to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 15 years.
It was also revealed he attempted to upload images of her body online but was unsuccessful.
In court, Brathwaite expressed remorse, explaining he believed that without proper psychological support, he would continue to be a threat to himself.
The court emphasized his fixation with violent images as a key factor in the case, and a victim impact statement from Fiona's mother described her as a compassionate woman involved in charity work and characterized by her kindness and caring nature.
