FAKE TAXI DRIVER CONVICTED OF KIDNAPPING, RAPING AND SEXUALLY ASSAULTING WOMEN
A man from London has been convicted of kidnapping and raping a young woman after posing as a taxi driver in Brighton.The incident took place in the early hours of Sunday, July 3, 2022, when Ruckling Ramsay, driving a silver Mercedes, was observed moving around Brighton's city centre.
He ended up taking a vulnerable 19-year-old woman into his vehicle and forced her to inhale white powder three times.
What ensued was a four-hour assault involving multiple sexual violations, as Ramsay drove the victim through various locations including Shoreham Power Station and isolated spots on the South Downs.
One of these assaults involved a weapon specifically a knife.
Around 9:30 a.m., the victim texted a friend, who tracked her GPS location, followed Ramsay’s vehicle, and rescued her when she got the chance to escape.
Sussex Police were alerted and provided support to the woman.
Ramsay was subsequently traced through his car registration and arrested.
Officers found condoms, Viagra, and lubricant in his car, along with evidence suggesting the victim had been inside.
His phone records indicated he had been loitering in Brighton that evening and had searched for solicitors after the incident.
Ramsay, aged 61 and living in Wanstead, London, was released on conditional bail as police continued their investigation.
On January 21, 2024, authorities from the Metropolitan Police began a new probe after a victim reported a similar attack.
This second victim accused Ramsay of abducting her and performing a series of non-consensual sexual acts in his vehicle, leaving her in a state of fear.
DNA evidence from her clothing was consistent with Ramsay’s, and vehicle tracking data confirmed his car’s presence near the scene at the relevant times.
Ramsay faced charges of three counts of rape, kidnapping, and sexual assault at Sussex Police, and additional charges of kidnapping and sexual assault from the Metropolitan Police.
During his trial, a witness linked to a 2009 case where Ramsay was the main suspect but not formally charged testified about his character.
On May 21, 2026, a jury at Inner London Crown Court convicted Ramsay on all charges after less than two hours of deliberation.
He is to be sentenced on July 15 and remains in custody until then.
