REDDITCH MAN RONALD SLATER SENTENCED TO 17 YEARS FOR SEX OFFENCES AGAINST YOUNG GIRLS IN WORCESTER
In a case that has shocked the local community, Ronald Slater, a 61-year-old resident of Redditch, was sentenced to a lengthy prison term of 17 years for a series of disturbing sexual offences committed against young girls.The crimes, some of which date back as far as 1982, spanned over a decade and left a lasting impact on the victims, who are now in their 30s.
During the proceedings at Worcester Crown Court, the courtroom was filled with a mixture of solemnity and outrage as prosecutor Jennifer Josephs detailed the extent of Slater’s misconduct.
Victims, who had come to witness the case, sat in the public gallery, their faces a mixture of relief and lingering trauma as the court heard the harrowing accounts of their experiences.
Ronald Slater, who resides on Abberley Close in Redditch, pleaded guilty to multiple charges of sexual assault and rape.
Throughout the hearing, he displayed no visible emotion as he was led away from the dock to begin serving his sentence.
His lack of remorse contrasted sharply with the profound distress experienced by his victims.
Miss Josephs recounted that following initial police complaints, Slater attempted to downplay his actions, claiming that the incidents involved only “mutual fondling.” However, the court was presented with clear evidence that his victims had been deeply traumatized by his conduct, which had inflicted lasting emotional scars.
It was also revealed that Slater had no prior criminal convictions, a fact that perhaps contributed to the initial underestimation of the severity of his actions.
His defense barrister, Sarah Buckingham, acknowledged in court that Slater was a paedophile, a fact that had been known despite his involvement in charity work, which he had carried out in the community.
Judge Michael Cullum addressed the court, emphasizing that the charges presented were only a fraction of the total misconduct committed by Slater.
The judge described the period of offending as spanning from 1982 to 1991, a nine-year window during which Slater’s actions degraded his victims and turned their lives into “a living hell.” In light of the gravity of his crimes, Judge Cullum ordered that Ronald Slater be registered as a sex offender for life, ensuring ongoing monitoring and restrictions to protect the community from further harm.
The sentence reflects the serious nature of the offences and the court’s recognition of the profound impact on the victims’ lives.
