RONALD FAIRHURST FROM BOLDON SENTENCED IN SOUTH TYNESIDE FOR ONLINE SEXUAL PREDATION

In May 2016, a disturbing case emerged involving Ronald Fairhurst, a 56-year-old former Royal Marine from Boldon, South Tyneside, who was convicted of engaging in highly inappropriate and illegal online communications with what he believed was a teenage girl. Unbeknownst to him, he was actually communicating with a team of paedophile hunters operating under the alias OPIT – the Online Predator Investigation Team – who pose as minors online to catch predators attempting to exploit children.

Fairhurst’s actions came to light after the hunters initiated contact with him, and what started as seemingly innocent messages quickly devolved into sexually explicit exchanges. Over the course of their conversations on Facebook, Fairhurst repeatedly asked the supposed 14-year-old girl, identified as Amber-Leigh Smith, to send explicit photographs of herself. Prosecutors revealed that the chat logs spanned approximately 125 pages, during which Fairhurst made numerous sexual advances, including requests for naked images and discussions about meeting in private.

One of the most alarming aspects of the case was Fairhurst’s decision to send a video of himself masturbating to the fictitious teenager, believing he was communicating with a minor. The messages also included references to sexual intercourse and attempts to arrange a physical meeting, although no such meeting was ever planned or took place. The court was told that Fairhurst’s behaviour was not only predatory but also indicative of grooming, as he sought to manipulate and exploit a minor for sexual gratification.

During the proceedings at Newcastle Crown Court, prosecutor Andrew Walker detailed the extent of Fairhurst’s misconduct. He emphasized that the conversations involved explicit requests for photographs and explicit videos, with Fairhurst actively seeking to engage the girl in sexual activity. The court heard that Fairhurst’s actions were part of a pattern of grooming behaviour, which culminated in him sending a video of himself masturbating, under the false impression that he was communicating with a young girl who could be his granddaughter.

Fairhurst, who resides on Hedworth Lane in South Tyneside, pleaded guilty to charges of attempting to incite a child to engage in sexual activity and attempting to cause a child to watch a sexual act. His defence lawyer, Gavin Doig, highlighted that Fairhurst had a previously good character and had made efforts to address his offending by attending counselling sessions. However, the court was also informed that following his arrest, Fairhurst was forced to leave his home area after being assaulted, which added to his personal difficulties.

Judge Tim Gittins delivered a stern judgment, condemning Fairhurst’s actions as highly predatory and dangerous. He stated, “You were engaged in a Facebook conversation over a period of time with a person who you thought was 14. In fact, it was a couple engaged in seeking to identify people like yourself preying on such underage victims in a sexual way.” The judge detailed how the conversations quickly became sexualized, with Fairhurst requesting explicit images and sending his own naked photographs, including a video of himself masturbating. He emphasized that Fairhurst’s behaviour was grooming, aimed at manipulating a minor for sexual purposes.

Judge Gittins concluded that such conduct warranted a custodial sentence. Consequently, he sentenced Fairhurst to 12 months in prison, ordered him to register as a sex offender, and imposed a Sexual Offences Prevention Order (SOPO) for ten years. The court’s decision underscores the seriousness with which authorities treat online sexual predation, especially involving individuals who attempt to exploit minors through digital platforms.
