DRUNK MAN WHO ATTACKED HIS SISTER AT MARSDEN COURT ORDERED TO SEEK HELP FOR DRINKING
A drunken man who assaulted his sister while she confronted him about his behavior has been ordered to seek help for his alcohol problem.Robert Walker, aged 33, grabbed his sister by the throat and pinned her against the wall as she attempted to address his unacceptable conduct.
His solicitor explained that Walker was upset because she invaded his privacy.
Walker had pleaded guilty to assault by beating at Kirklees Magistrates' Court.
The incident occurred at the home of Walker's father in Marsden on June 30.
His sister returned to the address later with their father.
Prosecutor Vanessa Jones told the court that she saw Walker sitting on the toilet with the door open, and she tried to speak with him after taking his phone.
Mrs.
Jones recounted: “He stood up from the toilet, grabbed her around the throat and pinned her against the wall to the point that she was on her tiptoes.” The victim was reportedly 'very scared' but managed to free herself and go upstairs after their father intervened.
She still had Walker's phone and used it to call the police.
Mrs.
Jones added: “She said that she would support the prosecution of her brother but also wishes for him to receive some help with his drinking problem.” A probation officer noted that Walker used to have a close relationship with his sister and looked up to him, but his alcohol misuse altered that relationship.
Walker has been described as 'intelligent' and 'quite creative', having completed a university degree in English Literature and Film.
He began drinking at age 16, although he had previously tried to cut back without professional assistance.
The court was told that until he overcomes his addiction, his goals are unlikely to be achievable.
Magistrates sentenced Walker to a community order with six months of alcohol treatment and ordered him to pay £85 court costs and a £95 victim surcharge.
